During this session, the overview presenters provided a brief presentation on critical issues pertaining to HIV prevention in Africa, including the science of HIV, the expanding and evolving epidemic, vaccine development for Africa, HIV transmission intervention, and the state of prevention interventions and vulnerability reduction. Discussants—as well as all participants—then had an opportunity to comment on the issues and discuss the topics in further detail.

Session III: Treatment Now!

During this session, the overview presenters will provide a brief presentation on HIV and AIDS treatment in Africa, including safe access to antiretroviral drug therapies and monitoring, HIV care and case management, access to basic and intermediate HIV health care, chemoprevention of HIV in infants, access to voluntary HIV counseling and testing, and palliative care. Discussants—as well as all participants—will then have an opportunity to comment on the issues and discuss the topics in further detail.

These considerations include the realities of living with HIV and AIDS in Africa, the human and social impact of the epidemic, education and outreach, HIV counseling and voluntary testing, orphans, gender issues, cultural beliefs, and stigma. Discussants—as well as all participants—will then have an opportunity to comment on the issues and discuss the topics in further detail.
