HAI scientists have been at the forefront of AIDS research since the beginning of the epidemic. Current research focus on the HIV subtype most prominent in Africa, HIV-1C, and include HIV vaccines, antiretroviral treatment, and new interventions to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission.
