Maternal and Child Health/Children, Youth, and Families

The goal of the concentration is to improve the health of children and theirfamilies through educating leaders in maternaland child health/children, youth, andfamilies (MCH/CYF). This interdepartmentalconcentration is geared toward studentswho desire careers in public health programsfor children and their families, andthose interested in research and/or teachingin this area. The curriculum focuses onthe health problems of the target population,programmatic and policy responses,appropriate research techniques, and specificleadership skills in courses in the fourparticipating departments: Society, HumanDevelopment, and Health, Global Healthand Population, Nutrition, and Epidem -iology. The MCH/CYF concentration consistsof four areas of study: MCH/CYF andhuman development, MCH/CYF and nutrition,child rights and global health, andcharacterizing the health problems of childrenand their families. As the concentrationdoes not offer a degree, prospectivestudents must apply to a department-baseddegree program and must complete therequirements for both the academic programand the concentration. The number ofrequired credits for the concentrationranges from 7.5 to 10 credits, depending onthe student’s degree program.
