AHRQ Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Health Services Research

The Harvard School of Public Health offers Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Health Services Research for physicians who wish to develop the skills necessary to become independent researchers in the areas of

  • Healthcare Quality Assessment and Improvement
  • Outcomes of Medical Care in Diverse Populations
  • Cost-Effectiveness Analysis and Technology Assessment of Medical Interventions
  • Healthcare Financing
  • Medical Informatics
  • Disease Prevention Policy

Based in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Health Services Research Training Program is offered in collaboration with the Department of Biostatistics, the Harvard Medical School and a number of Harvard affiliated Teaching Hospitals.

The Training Programs are individually designed by each Fellow in consultation with a Faculty mentor. They emphasize methodology in evaluation research, decision sciences, economics, and organizational analysis and combines formal coursework, tutorials and research experience.

Degrees and Study

MDs begin their fellowship experience by enrolling in the Harvard Summer Clinical Effectiveness Program. They may then elect to pursue a Master of Science or Master of Public Health degree during their tenure. Fellows who do not wish to pursue degrees are still encouraged to enroll in selected courses for credit or as an auditor. Fellows may attend seminars, colloquia, and other regularly scheduled research activities relating to their studies.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Fellowship must hold the MD, DDS, Ph.D., or an equivalent degree and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The program actively encourages the application to its Fellowships of women and members of historically underrepresented groups.

Fellowship Assistance

The Fellowship pays an annual stipend based on the number of years of relevant experience after completing the requisite degree. Awards range from $34,200 with two years experience to $50,808 with seven years. In addition, funds are available for tuition and other expenses.
