Admission Requirements

The Admissions Committee considers a number of factors in reviewing each applicant's qualifications for selection into the doctoral program. Criteria include, but are not restricted to: strong academic performance and test scores, international field work and professional experience in health systems, and oral communication and interpersonal skills as documented in letters of support. Admitted students should also demonstrate inquisitiveness, creativity, independent reasoning, and motivation and preparedness for a doctoral program. Admission is contingent on exemplary performance and the competition within the applicant pool.

Doctoral students must have completed five courses prior to matriculation in order to take advanced courses. They are: Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Introduction to Statistics and two out of three of the following--Introduction to Ethics, Introduction to Microeconomics and Introduction to Political Science.

All applicants are required to submit official GRE scores. The median scores for our incoming students are 740 in Quantitative Reasoning, 640 in Verbal Reasoning and 5.5 in Analytical Writing. Nonnative English speakers are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Most admitted students score a minimum of 620 (paper-based), 260 (computer-based) or 105 (internet-based). The Admissions Committee values competitive test scores but also recognizes that this is only one indication of a candidate's abilities. Applicants with scores lower than the mean may be admitted based on other outstanding qualifications.
