Students in the MPH Program may complete their studies full-time or part-time basis. A Summer-only option is available on a very limited basis. Full-time, part-time, and Summer-only students have the same academic requirements and all receive the MPH upon completion of their studies.
MPH Program
Options for Study
Full-time Option
Full-time students normally complete the program in two consecutive semesters (September through May). Students may elect to begin their coursework in July by enrolling in the Summer Session for Public Health Studies. In addition to completing a core curriculum, students pursue their professional objectives through a choice of seven career-orientated concentrations. Within their selected concentration, students choose a second tier of recommended or required courses and complete a practice course, which generally serves as the required culminating experience.
Students in medical school enter as MD/MPH students after the third or fourth year of medical school; these students must select the full-time option. The MPH degree is awarded following completion of the MD degree. MD/MPH students follow the same requirements as all MPH students.
Part-time Option
Part-time students complete the MPH degree over a period of two or three years (three-year maximum). Students may select courses during the fall and spring academic year, WinterSession and/or the Summer Session for Public Health Studies. In addition to completing a core curriculum, students pursue their professional objectives through a choice of seven career-orientated concentrations. Within their selected concentration, students choose a second tier of recommended or required courses and complete a practice course, which generally serves as the required culminating experience.
Summer-only Option
A Summer-only MPH program is available for students in only two concentrations: Quantitative Methods and Clinical Effectiveness. The program is completed in three consecutive summers beginning with either the Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness or the Summer Session for Public Health Studies. The summer option is only available to physicians or persons with relevant doctoral degrees. Students wishing to apply for the Summer-only MPH in Quantitative Methods or Clinical Effectiveness must observe the same admissions deadlines as all MPH degree applicants. Students in the Summer-only MPH must meet the same academic requirements as all MPH students.
