Career Coaching Program FAQs

The alumni career coaches (10) are HSPH alumni from various disciplines and professional backgrounds who are available to meet with students on an hourly basis to provide advice and networking suggestions.  These appointments are usually scheduled for late afternoon, early evening, or in some cases on the weekend.  A complete list of the coaches with biographical information is available on the CSO Portal. Students wishing to schedule an appointment with a career coach should contact the CSO at: 617-432-1034 or at: careers@hsph.harvard.edu

Who are HSPH Career Coaches?

HSPH Coaches are experienced professionals trained to guide students through the career development and job search process.  All of the coaches are contracted to work for the HSPH Career Services Office and have professional roles outside HSPH.

How can a Career Coach help me?

The Program is a customized program and the experience will be unique for each student.  Coaches are excellent resources for helping students through self-assessment, development of job strategies, resume/cv and cover letter preparation, networking techniques, interview preparation, and offer negotiations.

When will I be able to meet with a Coach?

Coaches determine their own schedule.  Coaches are available when students are not usually in class, either in the late afternoon, early evenings or on the weekends (Saturday/Sunday), throughout the fall and spring semesters. Please check coaches' individual schedules for their availability. Their time is limited so please plan your appointments carefully and alert coaches for any schedule changes.

How do I choose the right Career Coach?

Finding the right coach to work with is important.  You should select a coach based on your interests and needs.  If the first meeting with the coach you initially select does not feel right, you may choose to seek out a different coach.  If after two coaches you are still unsure of your choice, please contact the Career Services Office for assistance.

Can someone help me find the right coach?

Yes.  If you would like help in identifying the right coach based on your needs and interests, contact the Career Services Office at: careers@hsph.harvard.edu.

How do I schedule a meeting?

Once you have identified the coach of your choice, you may schedule your first meeting by coming to the HSPH Career Services Office (Kresge, G29) to schedule an appointment.

How do I cancel a Career Coach meeting that I have scheduled?

If you have to cancel a meeting that you have already scheduled, you must do so 24 hours in advance.  You should either contact that coach directly thought her/his email address or visit/call the CSO (617-432-1034).   Failure to show-up for an appointment without canceling will mean that you will not be able to make another appointment to see a career coach for another 4 weeks.

Can I meet with more than one coach?

Yes, but please don't overuse the system.  Occasionally, students will want to meet with one coach for industry/professional guidance and a second for more career strategy advice. Although, meeting with one coach through the job search process is typically more successful in securing a job.

Can I switch my Career Coach?

While at HSPH your needs and/or your interests may change dramatically.  If this happens and you would like to switch to a coach that has expertise in a different area, you may do so.  But please don't abuse the system.

How many times can I meet with a Career Coach?

Typically students should meet with a coach one or two times per academic semester.  This may vary by the student's needs and interests.

Can I communicate with a coach outside of scheduled meetings?

Yes.  Career Coaches may be contacted via their HSPH email address or by telephone once a relationship has been established.
