Sometimes the established approach to where and when you do your work gets in the way of more important considerations. You may find that working at home enables you to focus better or work longer at a particular task…or simply reduce your commuting time or cost. Or by shifting your work hours, you’ll be able to study for your citizenship exam, tutor a child, keep to your exercise routine, or take an elderly relative to an appointment. We know it’s hard to squeeze both personal and work responsibilities and interests into the same time slot. So, as much as possible, we encourage employees and their managers to work together to customize work schedules through flexible work arrangements.
A flexible work arrangement can be any non-standard schedule or number of hours, as well as job-sharing and telecommuting. Consider the options for flexibility at the Harvard School of Public Health, and if you believe you can get your job done and meet your department’s needs within a flexible arrangement, let your manager know.
