Myron Allukian, DDS, MPH '67

Dr. Allukian is an internationally recognized public health expert and the former Director of Oral Health for the Boston Public Health Commission.  He served as Chairman of the U.S. Surgeon General's Work Group on Fluoridation and Dental Health for the 1990 Prevention Objectives for the Nation, and the Dental Advisory Committees for Healthy People 2000. 2010, and 2020,  the National Health Objectives. Dr. Allukian is a past president of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the second dentist in APHA's then 118-year history and the first Vietnam Veteran to be President of APHA.

Dr. Allukian received his BS (Psychology) from Tufts University, his DDS from the University of Pennsylvania and his MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. While with the 3^rd Marine Division in Vietnam, he set up a "people to people" program in the orphanages, schools and villages in the Danang area. Board certified in dental public health, he is also a past president of the following: the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, American Board of Dental Public Health, Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Association, Massachusetts Health Council, Massachusetts Public Health Association, the Public Health Museum (of Massachusetts) and past chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry.

Dr. Allukian has over 135 publications and abstracts including 18 chapters in books. He has extensive experience in access, policy, vulnerable populations, prevention, education and delivery systems.  He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and is or has been on the faculties of the Schools of Public Health of Harvard, Boston University, and the Universities of Michigan and Minnesota, the Schools of Dental Medicine of Boston University, Harvard and Tufts and the Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists.

Dr. Allukian is a member of the Steering Committee of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a trustee of the New England College of Optometry and on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) and he was the dental clinical director of the New England AIDS Education and Training Center. He has received numerous awards including both the Distinguished Faculty and Distinguished Alumni Awards from Harvard, the Alumni Merit Award from the University of Pennsylvania, the Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Service to Public Health from the American Public Health Association (He is the 1^st dentist to receive this, APHA’s highest award), recognition from the American Dental Association, U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Public Health Service, and Honorary Fellowship in the Royal Society of Health of Great Britain. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences in 1991 and was also a member of their Future of Dental Education Committee. Dr. Allukian has been called “The Social Conscience of Dentistry”
