Evaluating Coalition Development

The Key Informant Questionnaire (KIQ)
Our primary mechanism for studying coalition formation and functioning is the Key Informant Questionnaire. This annual, self-administered questionnaire of program participants at each AMOD site aims to identify the determinants of effective coalition formation and functioning by examining the characteristics of (a) the coalition (e.g., diversity of membership, effectiveness of communication, and shared vision and decision-making); and (b) its members (e.g., duration of member involvement, consensus building leadership, and endorsement of the environmental model).

Key research questions include:

  • Are coalitions formed?
  • Who is involved in the coalitions?
  • What facilitates or impedes coalition efforts?
  • What factors are associated with effective coalition functioning?
