HSPH Faculty Members Receive Awards School faculty are having an award-winning season with faculty members receiving important awards in the recent past or in the near future. David Christiani, Director of the Occupational Health Program in the Department of Environmental Health, received the Herbert M. Karol Research Chair Award from the Brain Tumor Society at its annual meeting on November 13, 1999. The gift, in the amount of $100,000, will support Christiani's collaborative research with colleagues in Taiwan as they investigate the relationship between petrochemical exposures and brain neoplasms in children. The project, titled Molecular Epidemiology of Brain Neoplasms, will blend the role of both environmental and genetic influences in the development of brain cancer among residents in a heavily-industrialized area of Taiwan. Adetokunbo Lucas, professor of International Health at the school and an HSPH alumnus, received the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation in Thailand's 1999 international award for "outstanding contribution in the field of public health," along with Tore Godal of the World Health Organization. The award recognizes the two scientists for "their contribution in the development of the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), which has become a highly successful and productive program in tropical disease research." The award is given in honor of the late Prince Mahidol, who earned degrees in public health and medicine at Harvard in the 1920s. He went on to inaugurate a system of basic science teaching and medical education in his homeland, earning him the honorific "The Father of Public Health in Thailand." The award ceremony will be held on January 31, 2000 at a throne hall
in the grand palace in Bangkok and will be presided over by His Majesty
the King of Thailand. |
