Human Resources Welcomes New Staff Members

Anyone walking along the fifth floor of the Kresge Building recently has most likely noticed the new location and renovation of the Office of Human Resources. What may not be as apparent is the addition of four new staff members:

Patricia Edwards

The newest member of the human resources staff is Assistant Director Patricia Edwards, who started her new job on Monday, December 4.

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Edwards came to Boston in the 1980s. After working in human resources for a number of years, she eventually landed a position at Abt Associates, which transferred her to its office in Chicago, Illinois. While working full time, Edwards earned her undergraduate degree in human resources management at night at DePaul University. She eventually returned to Boston and accepted a position at the New England Medical Center, where she has worked for the past four years. She is currently pursuing a master's degree at night at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she first learned of the job opening at HSPH through a HU human resources director who teaches at Lesley.

Renée DeBlois

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Renée DeBlois came to the Office of Human Resources first as a temporary employee and then was hired full time as an assistant in October.

DeBlois received her undergraduate degree in English from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee in 1993 and then earned a master's degree in social work from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1996.

After graduation, she remained in the city and worked at a psychiatric hospital for adolescents in New Orleans for several years and then decided to explore job possibilities in information technology. What better place to do that than Boston, she thought, and moved to the city in May 2000. She feels that her new position integrates her interest in working with people and learning more about computers through classwork and daily responsibilities.

"This job appealed to me because it incorporated both information technology skills and social work skills," said DeBlois.

Kenia Franco

When Kenia Franco, assistant director, was nearing graduation from Boston College in 1990, she was unsure what job she wanted to pursue. With undergraduate degrees in psychology and spanish literature, Franco thought she would be a teacher or counselor. Then she attended a job fair at the college, where she began talking to a recruitment officer from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts and found that the job that interested her most was the one represented by the recruitment officer.

"I said to her, 'Your job sounds great'," remembered Franco.

As it happened Tufts had an entry-level opening in its human resources department, and Franco was hired. After three years, Franco accepted a position at the Gillette Company in South Boston and then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Most recently, she worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

She came to HSPH in May 2000 and holds varied responsibilities, including employee relations, compensation, training, special projects, and hiring exempt employees.

Linda Musto

Employment Specialist Linda Musto discovered her talent for working with employees as a manager of a retail clothing store in the early 1990s.

"I wasn't that great at putting the outfits together," laughed Musto, "but I was good at helping the employees."

Musto graduated from the State University of New York at Potsdam, New York in 1992 with degrees in biology and psychology. Before coming to HSPH in May 2000, she worked as the human resources manager at a security company for more than four years. At HSPH, Musto is in charge of hiring non-exempt employees. She said she particularly enjoys recruitment of potential hires and likes to match peoples' skills to job openings. At any given time, Musto is trying to fill an average of 25 non-exempt employee openings at the school.

HUMAN RESOURCES OPEN HOUSE

The Office of Human Resources will be holding an Open House on Thursday, December 14 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to introduce the HSPH community to its new location on the fifth floor of the Kresge Building. Refreshments will be served. All are welcomed.
