Mayor Bestows Award for Excellence in Children's Health to Program that Helps Homeless Kids

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, in the presence of Dean Barry Bloom and representatives of the Harvard Center for Children's Health, presented the 2000 Award for Excellence in Children's Health to The Horizons Initiative Community Children's Center at City Hall on January 25.

The $10,000 Award, sponsored by the center, Children's Hospital, Boston, and the City of Boston, annually recognizes a local program that has demonstrated innovative and effective approaches to promoting the healthy development of children.The Horizons Initiative offers a variety of services to homeless children and their parents. The organization offers kids educational play while helping their parents get back on their feet through on-site counseling, education, job training and parenting workshops.

Previous winners of the award have included the Bowdoin Street Health Center for its work to prevent lead poisoning in Dorchester's children, Crittendon-Hastings House for services to pregnant teens, and Bridge Over Troubled Waters for services to homeless families.
