Bruce Smith Named Mission Hill Citizen of the Year By Community Group

Bruce Smith, director of government and community programs, has received the 1999 Citizen of the Year award from the Community Alliance of Mission Hill (CAMH).

Marcia Ramos, president of CAMH, said that Smith had played a fundamental role in integrating institutional support for community needs, including helping to develop the Longwood Medical Area-Mission Hill food project that has become a neighborhood food pantry .

Smith, who has worked for either HMS or HSPH for 28 years, has been a resident of Mission Hill for most of that time. During 1999, he served on nine community boards. He also coordinates HSPH student, staff, and faculty interests in working with the community.

Past accomplishments have included mentorship programs for high school youths, bringing grade school kids to HSPH for introductions to basic concepts in public health, and the ongoing annual Walk for Health. In the past three years, the walk has raised a total of $170,000 for Mission Hill youth organizations.

"While this award was given to me," said Smith, "it really recognizes the school for all it has done in the community."
