Two Postdocs Win National Fellowship Awards for Biomedical Research

Two HSPH postdoctoral researchers have received fellowship awards formerly won by two Nobel-prize winning scientists.

Kerri Mowen of Laurie Glimcher's lab and Christopher Sassetti of Eric Rubin's lab, both in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, have won Runyon-Winchell postdoctoral fellowships from the Cancer Research Fund of the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Foundation.

The awards are given to young scientists conducting theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer. The fellowships run for three years. Of the more than 500 proposals, only about 60 are selected each year.

"I was elated when I found out," said Mowen, who is studying T-cell differentiation.

Sassetti, who is studying the pathogenesis of tuberculosis, added that he hopes the techniques he develops under the fellowship will be applicable to many fields.
