In Memoriam: Yuan-Chun Wang

It is with regret that we report the death of Yuan-Chun Wang, a first year doctoral student in the Department of Environmental Health. Wang was killed in a car accident during the winter break. She was 25 years old.

Wang was driving with a friend from Atlanta to New Orleans on Christmas Eve when her car ran off the road along Interstate 10 near the Mississippi border. Her passenger survived.

Wang received her SM in epidemiology last June and was continuing her studies under David Christiani, professor in the Departments of Environmental Health and Epidemiology. Wang's recent work has been on the respiratory health effects of cotton dust exposure in Chinese textile workers, particularly in non-smoking women. Christiani described Wang as "a bright, energetic and personable woman. She'll be sorely missed in the program."

A native of Taiwan, Wang was an active member of the Taiwanese community here, serving as a vice president of the Harvard Republic of China Student Club. Some of her fellow Taiwanese students from Harvard and MIT held a memorial service last week in Cambridge, which her parents were able to attend. A private Buddhist ceremony took place on December 30.

The school will hold a memorial service on January 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the FXB atrium. Information will be available at that time for those who wish to make donations in her memory.
