Awards, Prizes, and Honors

At the May 14 Awards Dinner, faculty and students were recognized for academic and public service accomplishments:

The Albert Schweitzer Award was given to Joseph West, master's student in the Department of Health and Social Behavior. This award is given to a student whose work and activities during his or her academic program have been marked by a "reverence for life."

West has been involved in numerous community-oriented projects, including the Men of Color Health Program in the city of Cambridge, the Roxbury Healthy Heart Advisors, and the American Cancer Society New England prostate cancer promotion plan. He also served as a board member of the Minority Student Health Organization at HSPH.

The Dr. Fang-Ching Sun Memorial Award was given to Karen Anderson, master of public health program; and Tayla Colton, master's student in the Department of Health and Social Behavior. This award is given to outstanding graduating students who have worked to promote the health and well-being of underserved people.

The Uwe Brinkmann Memorial Travel Fellowship was given to Clarissa Valim, doctoral student in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases. This award is given to a student whose work combines international health epidemiology and infectious disease research.

The Robert B. Reed Prize in Biostatical Science was awarded to Scarlett Bellamy and Stephen Lake, both doctoral students in the Department of Biostatistics. Students who receive this award have distinguished themselves in their studies, and the award is a testament of the high regard in which the faculty hold the recipients.

The Student Recognition Award was given to S. Bryn Austin, doctoral student in the Department of Health and Social Behavior. For more information on Austin, see the article on page one.

The Charles F. Wilinsky Award was given to Melitta Jakab, master's student in the Department of Health Policy and Management. This award is given to a student who demonstrates exceptional aptitude and achievement.

The Edgar Haber Award in Biological Sciences was given to John Marquis, doctoral student in the Division of Biological Sciences. This award recognizes original work that contributes to the understanding of biological problems of importance to public health.

The HSPH Class of 1999 alumni officers are Sudhanva Hegde, (center) president and MPH '99 (health care management track); Katherine Houston, (right) vice president and SM '99 (Department of Health Policy and Management); and Alicia Arbaje, (left) secretary and MPH '99 (health care management track).
