HSPH Mentoring Awards

A new award was inaugurated this year to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the advising and mentoring of students. Members of the school's student body submitted the names of individuals who enriched their academic, professional, or personal development at HSPH through guidance, support, and collegiality.

Students responded with enthusiasm, nominating twenty-three faculty members, including Iain Aitken, Graham Colditz, Allan Crocker, Lawren Daltroy, Karen Emmons, John Evans, Jane Gardner, Thomas Glass, Barbara Gottlieb, Jody Heymann, Allan Hill, James Maguire, Jane Murphy, Michael Reich, Marc Roberts, Steve Rudnick, Louise Ryan, Meir Stampfer, Helen Suh, Matthew Wand, and Walter Willett.

Chosen for the award, based on the number of nomination, were H. William DeJong, lecturer on health communication in the Department of Health and Social Behavior; and Nancy Turnbull, instructor in health care management, Department of Health Policy and Management.

Those nominating DeJong said that he was "generous with his time, advice, and support. He is extraordinaly accessible." Another wrote: "He has been kind, patient, and has guided me through my struggles to combine my skills and my interests." Also: "Like the best of coaches, he has been there to push me to strive to excel and to meet challenges that I sometimes feared were too great, but he was always there to support and encourage me."

A few of the comments from Turnbull's nominations: "She has spent an inordinate amount of time with me and others helping with career advice, academic guidance, and personal issues." Another said, "She always takes time for students, whether they are in her classes or not." Another wrote: "She is dedicated to the educational and career pursuits of students, as well as to the Department of Health Policy and Management, the school, and the health care industry."
