Institute Receives $100,000 Grant

The Harvard AIDS Institute has received a $100,000 grant from The Prince of Wales Fellowship Fund to support one African graduate student or post-doctoral fellow each year. The fellow will receive training in HIV/AIDS research techniques and procedures as well as theory in epidemiology, basic sciences, virology, immunology, or molecular biology.

The fellow will work with health care officials in the governments of southern African nations to determine needs for training, education, and research about HIV/AIDS. They also will support ongoing research at the institute.

"This fellowship is part of a broader commitment to developing African leadership in confronting the debilitating AIDS crisis specifically and public health problems in general," said Myron Essex, chair of the institute.

The Prince of Wales Foundation gave out five grants this spring. The Harvard fellowship was the largest.
