Johnson-Powell to Receive Yerby Award at Youth Development Symposium

Each spring, the school awards the Alonzo Yerby award to a public health professional who exemplifies Yerby's commitment to community welfare and the health concerns of the poor. This year, Gloria Johnson-Powell, professor of child psychiatry, HMS, and senior advisor on community and social policy research, Judge Baker Children's Center, will receive the award.

The annual award and accompanying lecture are sponsored in commemoration of Yerby, a member of the HSPH faculty from 1966 to 1982. During his tenure, he chaired the Department of Health Services Administration (predecessor to the Department of Health Policy and Management) and served as associate dean for community affairs.

Gloria Johnson-Powell, professor of child psychiatry, HMS, will receive this year's Alonzo Yerby Award on March 24.

The 1999 Alonzo Yerby Award and Lecture have the additional significance of serving as the closing events of the first-ever Boston Symposium on Youth Development. The symposium is designed to improve youth services by sharing with researchers, youth program practitioners, and policy makers the practical applications of the latest research innovations and program models.

The symposium will be held March 22-24 at Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Avenue, Boston. Participants include many HSPH faculty and researchers. The event is sponsored by HSPH, the City of Boston, Northeastern University, and more than 20 agencies.

The Alonzo Yerby Award and Lecture by Johnson-Powell will conclude the symposium on March 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the Blackman Auditorium.
