Student Awards

With graduation less than three months away, nominations for several student awards are now open, as well as competitions for Class Day and Commencement speakers:

Albert Schweitzer Award
The Albert Schweitzer Award is given annually to a graduating student whose work and current activities have shown a "reverence for life" while seeking, as expressed by the activist Schweitzer, to "make my life my argument."

The selection committee emphasizes service activities undertaken by nominees during their studies at HSPH. Nominations should be made by letter, describing in detail the relevant work and qualities of the nominee.

Finalists will be asked to submit additional information, such as a resume, by Monday, April 16. Members of the selection committee will interview finalists.

HSPH students graduating in the 2000-01 academic year are eligible. HSPH faculty, staff, and other students can submit nominations to Jennifer Moltoni in the Office for Students, Kresge G-10, by Friday, April 6. The award will be presented at the HSPH Class Day ceremony, on Wednesday, June 6. The recipient will receive a framed certificate.

HSPH Student Recognition Award
The HSPH Student Recognition Award honors an HSPH student who has demonstrated, through student activities and/or community service efforts, a commitment to excellence, leadership, volunteerism, and the highest ethical standards.

Candidates may be peer- or self-nominated, and all nominees must submit a current resume; brief summary of student/community service activities for the academic year 2000-01; and an essay (maximum 500 words) that describes his or her public health vision and a description of how his or her activities in the past year have exemplified this vision.

HSPH students in good academic standing who have not previously won the award are eligible. Nominations must be accompanied by a brief statement of why this person is being nominated to Jennifer Moltoni in the Office for Students, Kresge G-10, by Friday, April 6. Nominees will be notified and asked to submit additional materials, including the essay and description of activities by April 16.

The award will be presented at the HSPH Class Day ceremony, on Wednesday, June 6. The recipient will receive a framed certificate.

Students who want to be on the selection committee can e-mail Robin Worth at rworth@hsph.harvard.edu by Friday, April 6.

Gareth M. Green Award For Excellence in Public Health Practice
The Gareth M. Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice, sponsored by the Division of Public Health Practice and the Office for Professional Education, recognizes the student or student team whose public health practice project improves the health of a defined population and makes a significant contribution to public health practice.

The award is given in memory of Gareth Green, who served as associate dean for professional education and was the first chair of the Advisory Council of the Division of Public Health Practice at HSPH.

All HSPH students are eligible. Projects can be local, national, or international and must have been conducted for a course or directed study/tutorial during coursework at HSPH.

A faculty member must have supervised the project.

Interested students can pick up a nomination form from Laurel Landers or Rachael Ratto, Office for Professional Education, Kresge Room 506. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 20. A plaque of recognition and an award of $500 will be presented at the HSPH Class Day ceremony on Wednesday, June 6.
