Student Speech Competitions

HSPH Class Day as well as the University-wide Commencement exercises on the morning of Thursday, June 7 and the afternoon exercises at HSPH, will feature speeches by graduating students. For each ceremony, the speaker will be chosen through a competition. Speeches will be judged for intelligence, eloquence, wit, and significance.

HSPH Commencement Student Speaker
One graduating HSPH student will be chosen to deliver a brief inspirational speech at the school's afternoon ceremony on June 7.

Interested students must submit a typed manuscript, no longer than five spoken minutes in length, by April 20 to Jennifer Moltoni in the Office for Students, Kresge G-10.

Students should not put their names on the manuscript, but instead code their manuscript with a four-letter pseudonym unrelated to their names. Students should submit their pseudonyms and real names on an index card in a separate sealed envelope with their manuscripts.

Authors of selected manuscripts will be invited to present their speeches to a selection committee, which will choose one speech for HSPH Commencement. For more information, contact the Office for Students at 617-432-1036.

Graduating students interested in serving on the committee to select the HSPH Commencement student speaker can e-mail Robin Worth at rworth@hsph.harvard.edu by Friday, April 6.

Harvard University Commencement Speaker
The University's morning exercises in Harvard Yard include an address by a graduating student from one of the graduate or professional schools, including HSPH. The topic should be related to the student's graduate school experience at Harvard.

Last year, graduating MPH student Arese Carrington was chosen as the university's graduate-student Commencement speaker. Carrington now is associate director of the Harvard AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria.

To enter the competition, students must complete a 2001 Commencement Parts Entry Form, which will be available only at the Commencement Office, located in Wadsworth House in Cambridge during the month of March. The application and seven copies of the typewritten manuscript must be returned to the Commencement Office by noon on Wednesday, April 4.

On Thursday, April 12, the Commencement Office will notify students who have been selected for preliminary auditions on Tuesday, April 17. The final audition will be on Thursday, April 19. For more, call the Commencement Office at 617-495-5726.
