School Seeks Nominees for Three Awards

Nominations are now open for three awards that recognize students and others for service-related activities. Submit nominations to Jennifer Moltoni in the Office for Students, Kresge G-10, by Wednesday, March 22. All awards will be presented at the HSPH Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 11. Each award recipient will receive a certificate of appreciation.

Albert Schweitzer Award

The Albert Schweitzer Award is given annually to a graduating student whose past work and current activities have been marked by a "reverence for life" and who has sought, as expressed by Schweitzer, to "make my life my argument." The selection committee gives special emphasis to service activities undertaken by nominees during the course of their studies at HSPH. Nominations should be in the form of a letter, describing in detail the relevant work and qualities of the nominee. Members of the selection committee will interview finalists. All HSPH students graduating in the 1999-2000 academic year are eligible to receive the award. All HSPH faculty, staff, and students may submit a nomination.

HSPH Student Recognition Award

The HSPH Student Recognition Award honors an HSPH student who has demonstrated, through student activities and/or community service efforts, a commitment to excellence, leadership, volunteerism, and the highest ethical standards. Nominations should be a brief statement of why this person is a good candidate; nominees will be notified and asked to submit additional materials, which will include the following statements: (1) a brief personal summary of student/community service activities for the academic year 1999-2000, and (2) an essay (maximum 500 words) that describes the nominee's public health vision and how his or her activities for the year have exemplified this vision. Any HSPH student in good academic standing who has not previously won the award is eligible. Students interested in serving on the committee to select the recipient should e-mail Robin Worth at rworth@hsph.harvard.edu by March 22.

Public Health Award for Outstanding Service to the Community

This award is intended to recognize a member of the Greater Boston community who, through his or her dedication, persistence, leadership, and personal behavior, has advanced the general health of underserved populations. This award is most successful when it acknowledges an individual working at the grassroots level who has not been publicly recognized for his or her contributions to the community. Nominations for this award should take the form of a letter describing the relevant work and qualities of the nominee. Members of the Greater Boston community, excluding students, faculty members, and staff members at HSPH or Harvard University, are eligible, and all HSPH faculty, staff, and students may submit a nominee.
