Nominees Sought for Service Awards
The Albert Schweitzer Award is given annually to a graduating student whose past work and current activities have been marked by a "reverence for life" and who has sought, as expressed by Schweitzer, to "make my life my argument." Service activities undertaken by nominees during the course of their studies at HSPH are given particular emphasis by the selection committee. Nominations may be submitted by any HSPH faculty member, staff member, or student, and should be in the form of a letter that describes in detail the relevant work and qualities of the nominee. The HSPH Student Recognition Award honors an HSPH student who has demonstrated, through student activities and/or community service efforts, a commitment to excellence, leadership, volunteerism, and the highest ethical standards. Candidates may be peer-nominated or self-nominated, must be in good academic standing, and may not have previously won the award. All nominees must submit the following statements: a brief personal summary of student/community service activities for the academic year 1998-99 and an essay, not exceeding 500 words, that describes the nominee's public health vision and how his or her activities for the year have exemplified this vision. There is an interim nomination deadline of March 24 for all peer nominations, after which the nominees will be notified and asked to submit additional materials by the final deadline of April 2. Students who wish to serve on the selection committee for this award should Email Bernita Anderson, assistant dean for students, at banderso@sph.harvard.edu by March 24. The Public Health Award for Outstanding Service to the
Community recognizes a member of the Greater Boston community
who, through his or her dedication, persistence, leadership, and
personal behavior, has advanced the general health of the underserved.
Any HSPH student, staff member, or faculty member may
nominate someone from the Greater Boston community (who is not a
student, staff member, or faculty member of Harvard University) for this
honor. This award is most successful when it is used to acknowledge the
efforts of an individual working at the grassroots level who has not
been publicly recognized for his or her contributions to the well-being
of the community. Nominations for this award should take the form
of a letter describing the relevant work and qualities of the nominee.
