Upcoming Symposium Sets Goal to Promote Healthy Aging The Department of Environmental Health will host "Aging and Health: An International Symposium" at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge on September 14 and 15. The symposium is free. To register now, go to www.hsph.harvard.edu/aging or contact Arlene Kirsch at akirsch@hsph.harvard.edu. The goal of the symposium is to develop a new paradigm for healthy aging in the 21st century and publish recommendations to promote healthy aging. More than 12 percent of the US population is 65 or older, according to the US Census Bureau. The symposium will present research on elder labor, definitions of healthy aging, user-friendly housing, and the demands of an aging population on medical care. "Our school is poised to be an influential leader in research on aging populations," said Joseph Brain, Cecil K. and Philip Drinker Professor of Environmental Physiology and chair, Department of Environmental Health. "This symposium is intended to be a catalyst for integrating and promoting the school's work in this area, particularly with an emphasis on disease prevention. We invite others at the school working on aging issues to let us know their specific interest, attend the symposium, and participate in shaping its outcomes." Brain will speak at the symposium as will other HSPH and outside researchers.
