Takemi Program Welcomes Fellows

The Takemi Program in International Health welcomed twelve new fellows this fall. This year's fellows are the sixteenth group since the program's inception in 1984 and represent seven different countries.
The fellows come to the school to pursue research and advanced training in international health with an emphasis on the needs of developing countries. The program is named for Taro Takemi, a physician-scientist who served for over 25 years as president of the Japan Medical Association.

This year's fellows and their research are as follows:

Ogoh Alubo, professor, University of Jos, Nigeria: "Adolescent Sexuality and Reproductive Health in Nigeria."

Stacie Colwell, fellow, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign: "Fertility and Mortality Trends in Colonial Kilimanjaro."

Lola Dare, lecturer, University of Ibadan, Nigeria: "Health Reform and Reproductive Health in Nigeria."

Hidehito Imamura, vice president, Jiakai Foundation, Japan: "The Changing Accountability of the Japanese Health Care Organizations in the Era of Global Health Care Reform."

Sidika Kaya, associate professor, Hacettepe University, Turkey: "Developing a Utilization Management Program for the MOH Hospitals in Turkey."

Chwan-Chuen King, professor, National Taiwan University, Taiwan: "Evaluation and Improvement of Surveillance of Infectious Diseases."

Taiwo Lawoyin, consultant physician, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria: "Sexual Networking Among Married Men in Southwest Nigeria."

Zhengzhong Mao, professor, West China University of Medical Sciences, China: "Experimental Study on Establishing Cooperative Medical Systems in Poor Rural Areas of China."

Bodavala Ranganayakulu, faculty member, Adminstrative Staff College of India, India: "Developing an Integrated Health Management Information System in India for Effective Health Policy Making and Implementation."

Naoko Sakamoto, research resident, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan: "Childhood Obesity as an Emerging Epidemic in Developing Countries."

Durairaj Varatharajan, assistant professor, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, India: "Improving the Efficiency of Public Health Care Units In Tamil Nadu, India: Organizational and Financial Choices."

Frances Vavrus, lecturer, University of Wisconsin-Madison: "The Relationship Between Schooling and Fertility in Tanzania."
