New Registrar Starts Work on Tuesday

A new registrar will begin work in the Office of Enrollment Services next Tuesday. In her new role, Joann Wilson-Singleton will welcome nearly 850 incoming students to the school. Her arrival comes days before the unveiling of a revamped website that will allow students to register for courses using the Internet.

"Students as clients expect this kind of system," said Wilson-Singleton. "They are a digital generation."

Wilson-Singleton is no stranger to HSPH. From 1992 to 1997, she worked as assistant registrar before accepting the position of registrar at Roxbury Community College in Boston. This past year, she has worked as assistant dean for academic policy and registrar at Mount Ida College in Newton Centre.

She said that part of her job will be to make sure that students stay on track to graduate. At Mount Ida, Wilson-Singleton would review students' credit requirements and GPAs each month to ensure they met minimal standards. If she spotted someone in trouble, she would intervene, sometimes by arranging tutorial assistance. The interventions were often successful, said Wilson-Singleton, and they helped the people she considers her customers--the students.

"It feels nice to think you've made the slightest bit of difference to someone during a stressful time," said Wilson-Singleton.

In her free time, Wilson-Singleton volunteers for the Coalition of 100 Black Women, an organization that helps children and their families.

Her office will be in Kresge G-4.
