Reprise: Barry Bloom Named Next Dean of HSPH

Those departing for summer activities at the end of the last school year may have missed Harvard University President Neil Rudenstine's June 11 announcement that Barry Bloom has been chosen to serve as the next dean of the Faculty of Public Health. This announcement followed a fifteen-month international search, led by Rudenstine, with the active involvement of the HSPH community. "It was an extremely thorough search," said Rudenstine, "aided by the input of an extraordinary faculty advisory committee from the school, in addition to calls and letters from individuals at HSPH."

Bloom is an internationally distinguished scientist with a broad and inclusive vision of public health. He has accomplished much in his career thus far: he is cochair of the Institute of Medicine's Board on International Health and cochair of the board of trustees of the International Vaccine Institute. He has been a frequent force for progress within the World Health Organization, including recent service as chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of WHO's Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, in addition to chairing the Immunology of Tuberculosis Steering Committee. He also serves or has served on prominent committees or advisory groups formed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the National Research Council, and the Pan American Health Organization.

Trained in immunology, Bloom's recent appointments have been at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he has been the Weinstock Professor of Microbiology and Immunology (and past chair of the department); and at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where he was an investigator. His laboratory at Albert Einstein has played a key role in recent breakthroughs in tuberculosis research.

Over the summer, Bloom began shifting his life from New York to Boston, a transition expected to be complete by January. In the meantime, James Ware continues in his role of acting dean. Following Bloom's full-time arrival at the school, Ware will resume his position as dean for academic affairs, the post he held prior to serving as acting dean.

Barry R. Bloom will lead the school into the next millennium.
