Playing a Lecture

The lectures are in Adobe Flash format, however, you do not need to have Adobe Flash installed to enjoy them. They are provided in a self-contained file that plays on its own. This may raise security concerns with your system. This section will help you navigate past the security issues. Rest assured that there is nothing in these lectures that will harm or compromise your system in any way.

Clicking on a lecture to play will download the file from the internet. Your computer may ask you if you want to "Allow Active X controls." If you do not allow the controls you may not be able to see the lecture.

The computer will ask you if you want to Run or Save the file.

Choose to Run the file.

Next, there may be a security warning about the digital signature of the file.

Click on Run.

This should mark the end of security warnings, and the computer will now start opening the file.

IMPORTANT NOTE
When selecting a lecture to play (after finishing the above steps) , the computer may be slow to respond and it may seem like nothing is happening. DO NOT launch the lecture again as this will only delay the response time and will launch more than one instance of the lecture, causing some delay and possible confusion.

The lecture will open in a separate window filling the entire screen. Make sure that your sound is turned on and the volume is set to a comfortable level. There is a navigation bar at the bottom to help you move through the lecture:

The playhead can be moved to skip more than one lecture at a time. As you move it, it will display the number of the slide that you play if you were to start at that point. When using the playhead to skip to a particular slide, move it to the slide just before the one you want and then use the "Next slide" button in order to synchronise the audio, e.g. to skip to slide 13, move the playhead to slide 12 and click on "Next."

When you are done listening to the lecture, use the "Exit" button to quit the lecture. The Escape key on your keyboard can also be used to exit the lecture at any time.

Printing Lecture Handouts

You can view an electronic copy of the course lecture handouts that you should have received with this CD-ROM and/or print them. For this, you will need Adobe (Acrobat) Reader since the notes are provided in PDF format. If Adobe Reader is not yet installed on your computer, you can install it by following the instructions provided below.

Once Reader is installed, simply click on "Print Handout " on the menu to the left, then choose the lecture whose notes you want to print. This will open the notes in Adobe Reader in a separate window. You can then print from that window.

HOW TO INSTALL ADOBE READER
If you do not already have it installed, this section will help you to install Adobe Reader on your computer in order to view and/or print the course lecture notes. If you are using a computer on a home or office network or you do not have administrative priviledges then you will need permission from your network administrator or the owner of the computer in order to install.

To download Adobe Reader, go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Your computer may ask you if you want to "Allow Active X controls." If you do not allow the controls you may not be able to install Adobe Reader.

A window will open next asking if you want to run or save this file.

Choose to Run the file.

Next, you will get a window that asks Do you run this softwar?

Again, click on Run.

This will start the installation process, which may last a few minutes depending on your system's settings. When the process is finished your computer will be ready to view all PDF files, including the lecture handouts and the brochure included on this CD-Rom.
