Dr. Joe Makhema Joins Botswana–Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership as Co-Director, Senior Clinical Research Manager

For immediate release
March 18, 2003

Dr. Joseph Moeketsi Makhema will join Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership (BHP) as Co-Director and Senior Clinical Research Manager effective March 1, 2003.

"BHP has been fortunate over the years to work with Dr. Makhema on various research projects," said Dr. Max Essex, BHP chairman. "I am delighted that he will now bring his considerable experience and wisdom to bear full time at BHP."

Dr. Makhema has extensive experience treating people with HIV and AIDS both as a consultant physician at Gaborone Private Hospital and as a Botswana Government Physician Specialist at the Princess Marina Hospital. He currently serves on the Vaccine Committee, helping to oversee BHP’s Maiteko a Tshireletso Vaccine Initiative.

In his new role, Dr. Makhema will identify local research agendas for further integration into BHP’s work, and lead efforts to build local capacity in the research arena. Said Dr. Makhema, "AIDS and HIV are a great challenge to us all. Joining an institution which makes a positive impact on Botswana’s epidemic is a great opportunity for me to continue helping find solutions to this problem."

A member of the Royal College of Physicians, Dr. Makhema attended Gaborone Secondary School, and received his university education at the University of Botswana, the University of Nairobi in Kenya (where he attained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery), and Montreal Sick Children’s Hospital. He continued his medical education at Kenyatta Hospital in Kenya, and the Pfizer Foundation in Edinburgh, Scottland. He passed his post-graduate examination (MRCP) in the United Kingdom in 1993.

The Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership, established in 1996 by the Government of Botswana and the Harvard AIDS Institute, is dedicated to collaborative research and education activities in the fight against HIV and AIDS. In addition to undertaking HIV-related research relevant to Botswana, BHP engages in large-scale training programs for the country’s health care personnel. BHP’s state-of-the-art laboratory currently processes all HIV-related tests for the country.
