Basadi Treatment Study
The Basadi Treatment Study is being conducted on the grounds of Princess Marina Hospital among HIV-infected women starting antiretroviral treatment (ART) through Masa, the National ARV Treatment Program. The primary purpose of this NIH-funded study is to determine if HSV-2 co-infection influences how often and how much HIV virus is present in the genital tract among women taking ART. This is important because the presence of HIV in the genital tract is an indicator of HIV-infectiousness. This study seeks to enrol 400 HIV-positive women who are starting ART (200 who are HSV-2-negative, and 200 who HSV-2-positive). The study is expected to be completed in 2 years.
