Mpepu: A Randomized Study of Cotrimoxazole (CTX) Prophylaxis and Longer Breastfeeding Duration to Improve Survival among HIV-Exposed Infants in Botswana

Objectives:

  • To find ways to improve infant health and survival among infants whose mothers are HIV-infected but who do not themselves have HIV.
  • To compare overall survival from randomization (at 4 weeks of age) to 18 months of age among infants who are randomized to receive CTX vs. placebo in this period.
  • To compare HIV-free survival at 18 months among infants who are randomized at 4 weeks to breastfeeding until 6 months of age vs. breastfeeding until 12 of age months.
