Male circumcision is known to be protective against the acquisition of HIV, but few studies have been performed to assess its acceptability in sub-Saharan Africa. For this study, we surveyed adults in nine locations throughout Botswana to determine their attitudes towards male circumcision, and to determine the preferred age and place for male circumcision in the country. Interviews were conducted using standardized questionnaires both before and after an informational session about male circumcision.
The survey found that male circumcision is highly acceptable in Botswana. The option for safe circumcision should be made available to parents in Botswana for their male children. Circumcision might also be an acceptable option for adults and adolescents, if its efficacy as an HIV prevention strategy is supported by clinical trials. Results from this study will soon be published.
