Informed consent is the underlying principle of ethical research that implies and demands an individual's ability to make a decision autonomously. In this section we explore the limits of this idea and the ways context may affect the capacity of a person to act as an individual. We will examine critiques of liberalism and the applicability of the idea of informed consent in different socio-cultural contexts.
