The 2006 Diversity Workshop "Hazardous Sites in Underprivileged Communities: Challenges of Diagnosis, Clean-up, and Redevelopment" took place on June 12 from 8.45AM to 5.30PM in the Snyder Auditorium (room G-1) of the HSPH Kresge Building.

Speakers from the EPA, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, advocacy groups, community organizations, University of Massachusetts, and Harvard University presented their insights on the life cycle of diagnosing, cleaning and redeveloping hazardous sites from the perspective of environmental health, health policy, environmental justice, health education, and brownfield redevelopment.

Our Diversity Workshop is important to all parties involved, including local communities, because it promotes the importance of research in communities with substandard health care on important issues related to nutrition and physical activity. The workshop strengthens our relations to universities, research institutions, and community organizations committeed to improve the health of minorities. It is opened to a broad audience of students, faculty members, researchers, clinicians, and community workers. Most of the workshop presentations are now available.

The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Biostatistics, the Harvard Superfund Basic Research Program, and the Community Outreach Program of the Center Grant. Funding is provided by the National Institutes of Health (grant numbers 1-R25-GM55353 and 5-T35-ES07293) and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation
