Summer Program in Biostatistics 2001

Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CALIF
Major: Mathematics/Biology

Mentor: Brent Coull, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Biostatistics

Project goal: to investigate association between inutro exposure to anti-epileptic drugs and birth defects

I am interested in the fields that combine mathematics and biology. This seemed like the perfect opportunity which would allow me to see the applications of both areas.

I have learned more about the applications of mathematics to the health sciences. The introductory course in biostatistics offered to participants in the program was very helpful, in addition to being able to work on a research project with a professor from the Harvard School of Public Health. I have also been exposed to the many opportunities available in the areas of biostatistics through various seminars organized by the program directors.

Project: "Identifying risk factors for asthma using the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III)"

Through a program called the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program I have had the opportunity to conduct research in the field of chemistry, particularly with physical chemistry, involving laser spectroscopy. The reason I joined this program, was to get experience in conducting research with mathematics, in the field of biostatistics.

I now know what it is like to do research involving mathematics, in biostatistics as a result of this program. I will return to my college with this new insight, and see if I can further myself in this field at San Diego State, with some small research projects in this area of study if possible, through my program.

Associate Professor
Department of Biostatistics

Project: Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma: Analysis of Response and Survival

In the fall, I will begin my graduate studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I wanted to participate in this program in order to be exposed to Biostatistics before entering their Biostatistics program..

I have benefited from this program in two main areas. First, I have been given an introduction to Biostatistics. With this , I feel that I will be able to make a smoother transition into my graduated studies. Second, not only am I learning in a classroom setting, but I am also learning how Biostatistics is used in the area of Public Health through the research that I have been doing.

I have always been interested in the health of children since I was a child and decided to be a Pediatrician,.... But due to my interest in Maths, I decided to come to this program and learn more about how I could combine my Mathematical skills with my interest in Children's Health and the available opportunities out there for such dual interest.

I am glad I was a part of the Biostatistics Program, because I did learn more about Biostatistics. It was a GREAT program!

A sentence or two about yourself and why you joined the program

I am Michael Anthony Rambo I, a person with a liking for the quantitative sciences and to help people. I joined the program so that it could hopefully broaden my view of what I could do to help people using the quantitative sciences, statistics in particular. The program has done that.

This program has given me a detailed view of what a biostatistician does on their quest of making a better universe.

I'm Herminio Romero and I have to complete two years more of my undergraduate studies on the Business area. I decided to join the Summer Program in Biostatistics because I like very much the Statistics and this program is an opportunity to increase my knowledge of the Statistics' field.

This program has change the course of my studies. I entered in Business looking for something where I could study mathematics applied to something. Now, I found a field where I can do what I wish (Statistics) and contribute to the improvement of the human health.
