Recognition of Department Faculty and Students
Faculty and students in the Department received awards and honors from HSPH and from several professional societies during the past year for their contributions and achievements in the areas of scholarship, leadership and teaching of Biostatistics. Dr. Bernard A. Rosner, Professor of Medicine (Biostatistics), Harvard Medical School and Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, HSPH, was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association at the Joint Statistical Meetings held last August in Chicago. Dr. Rosner was chosen to receive this honor for "exemplary accomplishments as statistical collaborator in the health sciences; and for methodologic contributions to the assessment of measurement error and the analysis of clustered and longitudinal data."
Li Chen and Jason Fine won ENAR Student Travel awards this year for contributed papers and presented their papers at the spring meetings. Li was one of three students who received an additional prize for having submitted one of the three best papers.
For the second consecutive year Hongwei Zhao was one of three HSPH students honored to receive the Taplin Fellow award this past year. Each fellowship carries an award of $10,000 to be used to defray tuition costs.
Tianxi Cai and Stefan Horvath were awarded the Robert B. Reed Prize at this year's HSPH Commencement. This prize is presented each year to one or two Biostat students for academic excellence.
Additionally, the Department presented tuition awards to several of its students in the 1996-97 academic year. Raji Balasubramanian, Scarlett Bellamy, Judi Manola, and Carrie Wager were named Schering-Plough Scholars; Tianxi Cai and Carrie Wager were named Genetics Institute Scholars.
