“It took a lot of people’s help to get me this far. So doing something to give back to others makes me happy.”
Raphael Arku grew up in a rural village in Ghana, studying by candlelight. An excellent student, he landed a lucrative job as a geologist for a gold mining company after earning his degree. But he was disturbed by his employer’s exploitation of the land and water. When the company destroyed one village’s drinking water and walked away without suffering any consequences, it was more than Raphael could bear. He’s now studying environmental health at HSPH to help protect Ghana’s environment and the lives of its people.
