A safe laboratory environment can only be assured when designed with health and safety protection firmly in mind. This program offers a multi-disciplinary perspective on health, safety and energy conservation in laboratory design. You will acquire a solid understanding of the complex regulatory requirements and user demands of lab construction, renovation, and decommissioning from leading authorities in the lab design field.
The program allows you to apply theory to real-world situations through guided tours of newly constructed and renovated labs used for clinical, research, classroom, biosafety and animal research. Through lectures and problem-solving workshops, you will learn from and interact with scientists, architects, and engineers, and occupational health and safety professionals.
Guided lab tours limit the number of participants who can be accepted into the program. Register early to ensure your place.

Individuals involved in using, managing, designing, or constructing new laboratories or renovating existing laboratory facilities, including:

Upon Completion Of This Program Architects Will Be Able To
- Evaluate laboratory design options related to health and safety considerations
- Apply appropriate design information for laboratory types used in industry, academia, and hospitals
- Demonstrate familiarity with mechanical systems vital to state-of-the-art laboratory functions
- Decommission, decontaminate, renovate, and reconstruct old laboratories and laboratory buildings
Design and Facility Engineers Will Be Able To
- Apply laboratory design information regarding heat loads from research equipment, ventilation requirements, optimum air flows, and contamination control through air pressure regulation
- Identify recent developments in the design of HVAC systems for laboratories, including variable air volume (VAV) systems, and apply energy conservation measures
- Incorporate into practice important information about design of hazardous waste handling facilities, safety shower and eyewash stations, research support facilities such as machine and glassblowing shops, and fire protection systems
Occupational Health and Safety Professionals Will Be Able To
- Consult during design and construction with architects, constructors, owners, and users to ensure that the completed structure will be safe and free of health hazards
- Identify design features that provide solutions for the unique health and safety hazards associated with laboratories used for different functions
- Provide detailed specifications regarding laboratory support facilities for hazardous waste storage, packaging, and shipping
Learn Practical and Cost-Effective Solutions to Renovation and Reconstruction Issues
Pertinent topics include:
- Decontamination of an existing facility
- Special health and safety precautions in partially occupied buildings undergoing renovation
- Solutions for undersized service chases and shafts
- Adding energy conservation features
- Making old structures comply with recent health and safety requirements
- Green design and construction
- Case studies of successful reconstructions and details of decisions not to reconstruct will
also be presented

Substitution/Cancellation Policy
Substitutions may be made without additional charge. All requests for substitutions or cancellations must be made in writing. Cancellation on or before March 21, 2008 will be issued a refund less $150 administrative fee per person. Cancellations received between March 22, 2008 and April 18, 2008 will be issued a refund of 50%. After April 18, 2008, no refund will be issued. There will be no exceptions to this policy.
