Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies

Launching New Working Groups

The Harvard Pop Center supports and encourages the formation of working groups pertaining to the Center's four signature research areas:

1. Social and environmental determinants of population health
2. The causes and consequences of demographic and health transitions
3. Population mobility
4. Gender, labor market participation and population health and well-being.

Scope and Impact: Working group themes will fall under the four signature research areas of the Center. They can be based on a specific research design/method, health problem, risk or determinant, prevention/intervention strategy, or geographic location (for example, Southside Chicago, India, or South America). All working groups will be transdisciplinary in orientation. We expect the results of these working groups to include: 1) closer collaboration between individuals and Harvard centers and schools involved in population health and demography; 2) dissemination of the results in journal articles, seminar, conference, and poster presentations; and 3) plans for furthering the line of research including application for federal funding (e.g. NIH grant).

Eligibility and Organization: Any affiliated member of the Center may propose the formation of a working group. Each group will have a lead faculty member charged with determining the group's direction as well as a coordinator who will serve as the contact and organize meetings. A working group is entitled and encouraged to host special workshops and other gatherings in its subject area either on site or at other locations around the globe.

Working Group Formation- Procedures: Faculty or fellows wishing to form a working group must submit a proposal to the Pop Center outlining:

1. Description of research topics to be developed and aims of the group
2. Lead person for group (must be at the faculty, post-doc, or research associate level)
3. Research methods being proposed for group
4. Members
5. Planned activities (regular meetings, seminars, etc.)
6. Anticipated products (working papers, publications, lectures, grants, etc.)
7. Budget. While each working group will have different funding needs, some of the common expenses we would consider funding include costs related to hosting regular meetings and special events, travel for members, and hiring a research assistant. In some instances the Center would be able to offer administrative support (please specify in the proposal if you would need this as well)

If approval is granted, the leader must submit an annual report to the Pop Center highlighting its activities, financial health, and any products (e.g. publications or lectures) derived from the group. Expenses affiliated with the working groups will be underwritten by other funding sources at the Center.

Working Group proposals should be submitted to:
