HSPH China Initiative Co-Hosts Visit by Delegation from China State Environmental Protection Administration and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences

On January 14, 2007, the HSPH China Initiative and the Department of Environmental Health co-hosted a visit by a delegation of senior level officials from the China State Environmental Protection Administration and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences.  The delegation traveled to the US, and in particular HSPH, to learn more about current research achievements in the area of environmental pollution and America's treatment methods for evaluating pollution damage and procedures for compensation.   The delegation, led by Dr. Zhiquan Liu, Vice Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, spent the day engaged in discussion with leading HSPH faculty.  Dean of Academic Affairs James Ware welcomed the delegation and made opening remarks.  Dr. Douglas Dockery, Chair of the Department of Environmental Health, provided an introduction to the department, while Dr. John Xie, Senior Advisor to the HSPH China Initiative, introduced the Initiative.  Dr. Thomas Smith presented on his research on Diesel Exhaust Exposure in Traffic and Disease Risk; Dr. Sumi Mehta of the Health Effects Institute in Charlestown discussed HEI studies in China: Providing Relevant Evidence on the Health Effects of Air Pollution; Dr. Dockery discussed Air Pollution Health Effects: Assessing Benefits of Controls; and Dr. David Christiani presented on a 26 Year Harvard-China Collaboration on Occupational and Environmental Health.  A representative from the delegation also presented their insights into China's most pressing environmental problems and posed questions to the expert faculty on appropriate solutions and future collaborations with HSPH.  As Dr. Liu said about his impression of the delegation's visit to HSPH, "I sincerely hope we will be able to have more communication like this so that we can better exchange and share the research progress with each party to improve our cooperation."
