China Culture Night at HSPH
April 27, 2012, Boston, Massachusetts


Nearly 200 faculty, staff and students from HSPH expressed great interests on the splendid display of Chinese arts, music, songs and dance at the China Culture Night at HSPH. Organized by HSPH China Initaitive and HSPH Chinese Students and Scholars Association, this event provided audiances rare opportunity to learn Chinese culture and art. Professor Peichen Xu, a famous painting artist, exhibited his traditional Chinese ink paintings. Students from HSPH performed Chinese music, songs and dance.

HCHRG Seminar: Health IT in China's Hospital Sector

Information Technology has been recognized as an effective way to improve quality of care. China is also investing to develop health IT infrastructure and application in its hospital sector. Ms. Ting Shu, a health IT expert and visiting scholar at HSPH China Initiative introduced IT development in China's hospitals. Dr. Li Zhou, an IT expert at Partners HealthCare System introduced health IT research in the United States.

HCHRG Seminar: China Hospital Sector Overview, Performance and Reform

In the latest health care reform, China has put great effort to reform its public hospital sector to improve hospital performance and to provide high quality of care to people. HCHRG Seminar Discussion on Developing Emergency Medical Security System in China

Is emergency medical service a basic right for everyone? What is the best way to develop an emergency medical security system in China? Harvard faculty, scholars and students are looking for an answer to this important health care issue. At a recent HCHRG seminar, Dr. Yuanli Liu, HSPH China Initiative Director, presented preliminary results of the study "Developing an Emergency Medical Security System in China: Necessity and Feasibility".

Founded by Dr. William Hsiao and Dr. Yuanli Liu, the seminar series "Harvard China Health Research Group (HCHRG) provides Harvard faculty, scholars and students a forum to update and discuss China' health policy issues.

The 2012 Winter Session Course Conducted in China
January 3-19, 2012, Shanghai, Sichuan and Beijing, China
Lead and instructed by Dr. Yuanli Liu, the 2012 HSPH Winter Session Course -- GHP541 Trip to China -- has been conducted in China. Focused on health technology application, the Harvard students studied improvement of health performance with health information technology in Minhang District in Shanghai and enhancement of health care accessibility with mobile health in Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. The latter is the earthquake devastated area in 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Renowned Historian Introduced Public Health in Past of China

The Seminar Series on China's Health & Healthcare presented a lecture of Public Medicine in Nationalist China, 1928-1945. Dr. John R. Watt, a renowned historian on Chinese public health and medical history, introduced Harvard students and scholars the origin and practice of public medicine in early years of Nationalit China.

At the frist seminar of Harvard China Health Research Group (HCHRG) in 2011-2012 semester, Dr. Zhanchun Feng, Professor of Health Management School of Huazhong University of Sciences & Technologn in Wuhan, China and a visiting scholar at HSPH China Intiative introduced his on-going study of Performance Evaluation of Public Health in Rural China. Students from HSPH including the 2012 GHP 541 Winter Session Trip to China students attended the seminar.
HCHRG, founded and moderated by Dr. Bill Hsiao and Dr. Yuanli Liu, is a biweekly seminar for students and scholars in Harvard community to discussing and reviewing Chinese health care refrom and studies.

HUST Executive Vice President Visited China Initiative

As an alumnus to the Tongji Medical School, formerly the Tongji University of Medical Sciences and now an affiliated school to HUST, Dr. Liu was glad to meet his long-term friend Dr. Feng and other Tongji alumni organized by Alumni Association of Tongji Medical School in Boston area.

The 2011 China Senior Health Executive Education Program (Fall class)

The students included 23 senior health policy makers and hospital presidents from the Ministry of Health, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, agencies of State Council, several provincial health departments and some large hospitals.

The Harvard America-China Health Summit Conducted on September 21-22
September 21-22, 2011, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Organized by the Harvard School of Public Health China Initiative, the inaugural Harvard America-China Health Summit (HACHS) was conducted at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center of Harvard University in Boston on September 21-22, 2011. More than 700 registered participants attended the event. High-level dialogues on a wide range of public health and healthcare reform topics were conducted among leading health policy makers, experts and senior executives from the China, U.S. and beyond.
As part of the official agreement under the auspices of the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, the Chinese Ministry of Health and US Department of Health and Human Services have committed to supporting this Summit. Dr. CHEN Zhu, Chinese Health Minister and Ms. Sherry Glide, Assistant Secretary of U.S. DHHS presented keynote speeches at the opening session. The discussions featured 8 sessions with over 30 speakers from China, U.S. and international organizations.

At this meeting, Dr. Li Yang, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Health Economics at School of Public Health of Peking University introduced her study of Access to Essential Medicine in China, Challenges and Preliminary Results; and Weihua An, Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology, Harvard University presented his study of Peer Effects on Adolescent Smoking and Social Network-Based Interventions.


Fudan Hospital Support Services Delegation Visits HSPH China Initiative

Lead by its Chairman, Dr. Qiang Fang, Fudan Hospital Support Services (FHSS) delegation visited HSPH China Initiative. During their visit, China Initiative Director Dr. Yuanli Liu introduced them the science and method of health system study. They discussed the mutual interests on improving hospital management in China. Coordinated by HSPH China Initiative, the delegation also visited Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Based in Shanghai, China, FHSS is an integrated institution of Fudan University providing support and logistic services to Fudan's affiliated hospitals.
HCHRG Meeting: Taiwanese Health Insurance and Global Budget Payment

Healthy Beijing 2020

A symposium of "Healthy Beijing 2020 -- Deepening Health Care Reform in Beijing" was convened at Tsinghua University. Policy makers and researchers from Ministry of Health of China, Beijing Health governmental departments and Tsinghua University attended the symposium.
Dr. Yuanli Liu, Director of HSPH China Initiative, presented the research result and policy recommendations of the Healthy Beijing 2020 Project. Ms. Xiaofang Han, Director of Beijing Health Reform Office highly appraised the efforts made by the research team and introduced the development of health care reform in Beijing.
HSPH Winter Session course students attended the symposium and presented to the audiences about their studies on China's health care and international experiences on health care reform.



Conference on Integrated Medical System
January 8, 2011, Shanghai, China

Organized by Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, a Conference on Integrated Medical System was held in Shanghai. Participants included health policy makers from Shanghai Health Bureau, hospital directors and administrators. Dr. Jianguang Xu, Director-general of Shanghai Health Bureau introduced the meeting and pointed out that integrated medical system is one of the key health care reforms in Shanghai.
HSPH China Initiative Director Dr. Yuanli Liu gave a keynote speech on coordinative medical care. HSPH Winter Session course students were invited to attend the conference.
HSPH China Initiative Alumni Gathered in Shanghai to Discuss Health Care Reform
