The HSPH China Initiative organizes and hosts the first lecture in China Health and Healthcare Seminar Series. Dr. William Hsiao, K.T. Li Professor of Economics, presented on "China Health Care Reform: The Good and the Bad." To read more about this seminar, please visit HPH NOW.
Through the seminars series, the Initiative seeks to provide a context for information sharing and dissemination, substantive discussions on both completed and on-going research in China, and networking opportunities for students and faculty to identify future areas for collaboration. Minister of Health Praises China Initiative
In a keynote speech at Tsinghua University in Beijing on January 12, China's
Health Minister Chen Zhu described the HSPH China Initiative as
becoming the "most influential training program for China's health sector
leaders."

Towards a Cleaner and Healthier Environment in China
HSPH China Initiative Co-Hosts Visit by Delegation from China State
Environmental Protection Administration and the Chinese Academy of
Environmental Sciences
On January 14, 2007, the HSPH China
Initiative and the Department of Environmental Health co-hosted a visit by a
delegation of senior level officials from the China State Environmental
Protection Administration and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences. The delegation traveled to the US, and in
particular HSPH, to learn more about current research achievements in the area
of environmental pollution and America's treatment methods for evaluating
pollution damage and procedures for compensation. The delegation, led by Dr. Zhiquan Liu, Vice
Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, spent the
day engaged in discussion with leading HSPH faculty. Dean of Academic Affairs James Ware welcomed
the delegation and made opening remarks.
Dr. Douglas Dockery, Chair of the Department of Environmental Health,
provided an introduction to the department, while Dr. John Xie, Senior Advisor
to the HSPH China Initiative, introduced the Initiative. Dr. Thomas Smith presented on his research on
Diesel Exhaust Exposure in Traffic and Disease Risk; Dr. Sumi Mehta of the
Health Effects Institute in Charlestown discussed HEI studies in China:
Providing Relevant Evidence on the Health Effects of Air Pollution; Dr. Dockery
discussed Air Pollution Health Effects: Assessing Benefits of Controls; and Dr.
David Christiani presented on a 26 Year Harvard-China Collaboration on
Occupational and Environmental Health. A
representative from the delegation also presented their insights into China's
most pressing environmental problems and posed questions to the expert faculty
on appropriate solutions and future collaborations with HSPH. As Dr. Liu said about his impression of the
delegation's visit to HSPH, "I sincerely hope we will be able to have more
communication like this so that we can better exchange and share the research
progress with each party to improve our cooperation."

China Initiative Director Dr. Yuanli Liu to appear on Chinese T.V. show "Brainstorming," which was filmed in Shanghai and features a lively debate on the problems facing China's health system and their solutions.
