HSPH Celebrates New International Initiative in New York City

U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes of Maryland was the keynote speaker at an event hosted by HSPH on May 9 at the Harvard Club of New York City to celebrate the launching of the International Initiative for the Environment and Public Health. The Initiative is a unique collaboration between HSPH and the Republic of Cyprus to address key environmental and public health issues in Cyprus and throughout the Mediterranean region. The Initiative brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners from Harvard, Cyprus, and the Mediterranean region to build international capacity in environmental and public health education, research, and practice which are critical to protect the environment and safeguard health. The research findings will ultimately generate important discoveries benefiting the environment, human health, and the economy.

The event was co-sponsored by the Cyprus Children's Fund, the Cyprus Federation of America, Inc., the Cyprus-US Chamber of Commerce, the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), and the Pancyprian Association. There were many special guests including the Honorable Paul S. Sarbanes, (D), Maryland, (Keynote Speaker), His Excellency Tassos Papadopoulos, President of the Republic of Cyprus (by video recording), His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Church of America, and Barry R. Bloom, Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health.



Government of Cyprus Commits to Establish International Initiative for the Environment and Public Health in Association with the Harvard School of Public Health

June 2, 2004

Boston, MA—The Government of the Republic of Cyprus will establish an international research, education and training effort for the environment and public health in association with the Harvard School of Public Health. To launch the initiative, the Government of Cyprus is contributing funds for both endowment and research grants to HSPH, as well as establishing a new Cypriot government-sponsored international research institute in Cyprus.
