The Law and Public Health Group is focused on a policy issues at the intersection of the legal and health care systems. We take an empirical approach to most of our resarch, blending methods from the social and statistical sciences with more traditional legal research methods.

In one current study, we are exploring the potential for the medical malpractice system to yield important insights into causes of medical errors. A second study, conducted in collaboration with investigators at RAND, examines appeals by managed care enrollees against benefits denials by their health plans. In a third study, we are investigating the causes and impacts of the medical malpractice “crisis” in Pennsylvania.

Policy areas addressed in recent research projects include the performance of the National Practitioner Data Bank, disclosure of medical injury to patients, HIV discrimination in the workplace, and the evolution of informed consent law.
