Richard Monson Retires

Retirement Announcement

Richard Monson, a well-loved member of our community, will be retiring at the end of the year and transitioning to Professor Emeritus. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Monson, you can get to know him through his biography and an interview from 1981, both below. We in the Epi Department wish Dr. Monson all the best, and hope he enjoys his retirement. We also hope he'll come back to the department to visit. Thanks for all your years of service, Richard!

Richard Monson is Professor of Epidemiology in the Departments of Epidemiology and Environmental Health and was Associate Dean for Professional Education from 1998 to December 2006.  He was Director of the MPH Program during the same period.  His research interests in epidemiology include evaluation of the risks of exposure to radiation, health effects of exposure to machining fluids, and potential health effects of environmental exposure to chemicals. From 1992 through 2004, he was principal investigator of a Superfund program project award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Dr. Monson has served on numerous national and international advisory groups, including three committees of the National Research Council (NRC), and on several public and private advisory committees that addressed issues concerning exposure to radiation and the potential health effects of environmental exposure to chemicals. He served as chair for the multinational peer review of the epidemiology program of the U.S.-Japan Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) and he was a member of the scientific committee on Effects of Radiation on the Embryo-Fetus, of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP). He was chair of the NRC BEIR VII committee that evaluated the relation between low doses of ionizing radiation and possible effects on humans.  From 1993 to 1998, he served as editor of Cancer Causes and Control. Dr. Monson has more than 160 publications in radiation and occupational epidemiology, including the text Occupational Epidemiology. Dr. Monson earned his MD from Harvard Medical School and his SD from HSPH.
