Department of Epidemiology Programs 

The doctoral programs (SD and DPH) at the Department of Epidemiology are designed for students who plan careers in epidemiologic research or teaching and for those who aspire to leadership roles in the health professions. The degree generally takes three to five years to complete, most of the first two years are devoted to coursework. All doctoral candidates are required to take all the Required courses, 10 credits in Substantive Courses, 20/40 credits in Epidemiology (major), 10/40 credits in Biostatistics (1st minor) and10/40 credits in their 2nd elective minor (e.g. Health Policy, Decision Sciences). Subsequently, doctoral candidates must pass the departmental written examination and the school-wide oral qualifying examination; adhere to the doctoral timetable for maintaining satisfactory progress; complete, defend, and submit a thesis; and gain experience in teaching and research.
