About the conference

This invitational conference takes place during an era of increasing complexity in the world. We will set the context by considering current conditions — environmental, political and economic — that must inform our work. We will bring to the table decision makers and researchers from various sectors. We will acknowledge the complexities that challenge our work, such as global transportation, food and energy interdependence and climate change. The last alters both spread of disease and the consequences of severe weather.

Working groups will identify best practices from around the world and examine the application of key tools with the aim of recommending novel cross-sectoral strategies to minimize human and financial losses in these target areas. Another objective is to prepare the public for action in anticipation of dangerous events with worldwide implications. We will look at cultural differences in responding to and preparing for major threats and examine how this influences efforts like risk communication and the formation of partnerships.

The symposium’s overarching priority is to stimulate concerted action among partnering organizations. Effective partnerships across disciplines and across borders have never been more crucial to human survival and a healthy, prosperous global community.

Conference Themes

  • Primary prevention. Long before a disaster happens, actions can be taken to mitigate the consequences of that event. In some instances, disasters themselves can be prevented.
  • Best practices on a global scale. We can learn from each other. For example, Japan and California lead the way in regard to preventing the consequences of earthquakes. Evaluating the past can help shape the future.
  • The role of leadership. What types of hierarchical structure produce the best results, before, during and after disasters? How do we ensure flexibility and yet accountability? How do we create complementary and mutually reinforcing actions among agencies and groups, especially when trans-border issues are involved?
  • Integration. How do we integrate the tools or instruments of effective action in a functional way? The conference will identify relevant models of cooperation that can be used to save lives and minimize financial losses.
  • Publications, recommendations and policy. We seek to have a lasting impact by defining optimal strategies to prevent human and financial losses. Recommendations will be drafted, published and communicated to help shape policies and standards. This symposium will launch a continuing effort.
