Take the Stiars Competition

Take the Stairs Competition

The Competition

The "Take the Stairs" competition is part of a campaign aimed at improving human health (by getting people to take the stairs more often) and reducing our environmental impact (by using the elevator less and thereby using less energy). Because HSPH has a special connection to people and research in Tanzania, the EcoOpportunity Team created this competition around the theme of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is located in northeastern Tanzania and is the highest peak in Africa at 19,330ft. The mountain is an inactive volcano that has three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, and is one of the largest stratovolcanoes in the world. There are several routes of varying difficulty by which to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.

This spring's competition is brought to you by HSPH's EcoOpportunity Team - a group of environmentally-conscious HSPH staff, students, and researchers who are committed to lessening our environmental impact here at HSPH. Please participate in other EcoOpportunity Team efforts, including an entire week of celebratory Earth Day events.

The Rules

  1. The Team Captain may register teams of no more than 4 people beginning on April 1st. Teams may include people from various HSPH departments, provided that all members have an official Harvard email address. Registration ends April 21st.
  2. Prizes will be awarded for the first three teams to reach the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, though all teams to finish the competition will receive a participatory T-shirt.
  3. The competition will last from April 22nd through May 22nd.
  4. Each team member is responsible for logging onto the PIN-enabled system and tracking his or her own stair usage (entered in flights, where one flight = one floor). One flight of stairs walked (up or down) will be the equivalent of 15 feet climbed up Mt. Kilimanjaro. For HSPH community members located at Landmark, 4 flights of stairs may be logged for each trip "Across the Sahara" between Landmark and Kresge - or 8 flights for a round-trip trek.
  5. Adhere to the honesty policy. Only self-report flights of stairs that you actually walked, not flights of stairs that you only thought about walking. Only stairs taken at HSPH count toward this competition.
  6. Have FUN!

Stairwell Beautification Project

During the competition, attempts will be made to beautify the stairwells by posting photo submissions from members of the HSPH community. Landscape photos are preferred and final decisions rest with the EcoOpportunity Team/HSPH Operations. Please email digital photo submissions to greenideas@hsph.harvard.edu.
