The activities of the Center’s continuing education and outreach programs reach to the far corners of New England. The outreach program, a joint effort with the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, networks with academic institutions, agencies, professional societies, public health departments, unions, and community associations to increase awareness of occupational safety and health issues and foster the development of a regional occupational safety and health network.
The Program for Executive and Continuing Professional Education offers two-day to weeklong courses for occupational and environmental health, safety, and medicine professionals. A diverse suite of courses cover topics including emergency planning, ergonomics, environmental health, healthcare leadership, industrial hygiene, laboratory design, management and leadership, radiation safety, risk communication, and more.

The primary goal of this program is to encourage the evolution of occupational safety and health training capabilities at other academic institutions.
The visiting scholars program brings a select group of scholars representing institutions of higher education, state legislature, and other organizations to the Center several times a term for an orientation to the field of occupational safety and health, meetings with faculty advisors, and a program development seminar.
Minority Mentorship Program
The Minority Mentorship Program is designed to provide minority college students, medical students, nurses, and other professionals interested in occupational safety and health an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the fields of occupational hygiene, injury prevention, occupational health nursing, or occupational medicine. Fishing Research and Outreach
Ann Backus, Director of Outreach, conducts outreach to the fishing community as a governor-appointed committee member of the Maine Commercial Fishing Safety Council, author of a bimonthly byline titled “FISH SAFE” in Commercial Fisheries News, and author of “The Voice of Safety” in The Fisherman’s Voice. She provides training and education to fishermen through the annual Fishermen’s Forum, the Fishermen’s Day in Stonington, Maine, and as an invited presenter at local and regional gatherings of fishermen.
