The program in Occupational Health Nursing provides nurse practitioners
with expertise in occupational safety and health, research methodology,
and advanced practice nursing. Students are prepared to assess and
treat primary care problems while focusing on the health care of
workers. Emphasis is placed on identification of health hazards,
workplace assessment, program planning and intervention, worker
health promotion, and disease and injury prevention. The program
is offered in collaboration with neighboring institution Simmons
College. Fall and part-time study is available.
Academic Degree Programs
An Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner program is offered at
Simmons College and leads to a Master of Science degree in Primary
Health Care (Occupational Health) from Simmons College.
A dual degree program is offered by the Harvard School of Public
Health and Simmons College and leads to a Master of Science degree
in Primary Health Care (Occupational Health) from Simmons College
and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health (Occupational
Health) from Harvard University. In the dual degree program, courses
are taken concurrently at both institutions.
The Doctor of Science program in occupational health at the Harvard
School of Public Health is available to nurses interested in pursuing
higher-level training.
Practical Training
Didactic training is enhanced by visits to a variety of workplaces
to learn survey techniques and methods of identifying hazardous
processes.
Industrial settings, clinics, hospital-based occupational health
programs, and governmental agencies serve as sites for clinical
experiences.
A research project is completed at sites within the clinical or
industrial community.
The program prepares the student with the essential content needed
to sit for the adult nurse practitioner and the occupational health
nurse certification exams.

Admissions Requirements
Candidates for the master's program must have a bachelor's degree
and the equivalent of one year of recent clinical nursing experience.
Nurses interested in the dual degree program must apply to and be
admitted by both institutions.
Applicants to the doctoral program may be expected to complete
the master's degree requirements prior to being granted admission
to doctoral study. Preference is given to doctoral program applicants
with research experience and scientific publications.
