Research

Dr. Newhouse's current research focuses on several areas:

  1. He is interested in the effects of varying degrees of risk that physicians, especially gatekeeper physicians, in managed care organizations bear on utilization, costs, outcomes, and selection behavior. He is also interested in the consequences of the degree of risk bearing at the level of the plan; although managed care plans typically bear all the risk for a year, this is not the case for managed behavioral health care organizations, who frequently leave some of the risk with the employer or governmental agency.
  2. He is exploring why health maintenance organizations have not entered smaller markets.
  3. He is estimating effects of selection in health insurance.
